Digging? Call 811 first.
If you’re planning to do any digging around your property, it’s important that you call 811 first. That’s the number for UDig NY, New York State’s Dig Safely program, which is intended to prevent accidental damage to our gas and water lines.
After you’ve made the call, the program contacts any registered utilities with service lines in the area to alert them that their lines need to be marked before digging begins. That includes us. The LLPOA is registered with the program and Brad Winer has graciously volunteered to be our representative. So, Brad will be alerted when you call 811 and he’ll mark the location of any of our water-system pipes in the vicinity of your digging location.
This is critical. The LLPOA joined the program after we had to do an expensive repair; O&R accidentally damaged one of our water pipes while servicing a utility pole, resulting in a water leak. Because the water pipe wasn’t marked, it became the association’s responsibility to pay for the repair.
UDig NY is available 24/7. But you must call at least two, and not more than 10, days before digging. Click here for an online quick reference guide to safe DIY digging.
